CLYDE at the Devil’s Burdens Relay 2020
While other CLYDE members were talking part in the Edinburgh City Race last Saturday, six club members were representing CLYDE in the annual Devil’s Burdens Relay in Falkland. The race, which involves four legs (two run singly, two run in pairs) involves a certain amount of navigation and attracts a number of orienteers as well as top hill runners from around Scotland. This is the third year CLYDE has taken part, and this year saw debutants Ben and Alice join the team. Ben Lewis ran an excellent first leg to bring us back in 53rd place and handed over to Mirjam Allik and Alice Wilson who did an outstanding job to finish 54th on leg 2 (probably the longest and toughest leg). This good work was then somewhat undone by Stephen Wilson and Ty Solomon who - slightly embarrassingly for orienteers - lost the route on the way up the hill and dropped around 5 minutes and 20 places before getting back on track to finish 94th on leg 3. The final leg, which, rather unusually, was in a score orienteering format with route choice left up to the individual runners, was run by Iain Mennie, who finished 54th on the leg. Overall, despite the wobble on leg 3, the team finished a very respectable 59th out of 154 teams before adjourning to a nearby cafe for much needed refreshment. Full results can be found here.
