bto SOUL 2015
With the bto SOUL series coming to the end of its 3rd year the SOUL coordinator is already looking towards the 2015 series. Overall participation for 2014 is again hitting 600+ showing that urban orienteering continues to be popular, whether on its own or as a complement to a Sunday in the forest.
We already have bto SOUL 1 in place in Riccarton, Edinburgh on 31 January (ESOC 25 anniversary weekend) and are keen to hear from clubs who may be thinking of putting on an urban race in 2015.

By request from SEDS, we are experimenting with 2 new courses for 2015. This will be an elite distance sprint for men and women with a 15min winning time. These courses will be open to anyone over 16 (u16 will also be able to compete if the BOF insurance rules are satisfied by the courses) and will also be part of the league. The aim is to help our elites prepare for WOC by providing them with as many opportunities to compete as possible, but they will also provide opportunities for individuals to try sprint orienteering who may not wish to undertake a long urban course. Importantly, these two classes will be optional, meaning that if there are any issues (safety, traffic, planning etc) preventing the running of these courses, the SOUL event can still take place without them.

Brief update on LiDAR:
Following the agreement with sportscotland there has been a very good uptake of LiDAR data from clubs including ELO, CLYDE, FVO, BASOC,  RR, KFO, MAROC and STAG.  The data has also been used for SOA mapping including new ROMP maps (in conjunction with WOC training areas).  A number of requests have had to be turned down from non-orienteers – licence conditions are specific “to use, copy and adapt the Materials to the extent reasonably required to receive and deliver your (SOA) programmes in Scotland”.  Coverage of Scotland is incomplete, but excellent in some areas.  Please refer to the information on the SOA website, including a link to the KMZ file that will open up in Google Earth.  Requests for data should be directed to Colin Matheson, preferably with marked up OS map or similar defining area of interest.
