From the SOA President
I don’t usually use the electronic Newsletter to highlight SOA news, but I thought I’d break with tradition this time.
Most of you will be aware of the success of the recent WOC2015 bid. The kick-off meeting will be held on 17th September. I just wanted to pay tribute to 4 individuals. Scott Fraser was the spark who ignited the whole process, and was there at the end to support the bid in France this year. Stuart Turner and the Event Scotland team have really been superb in their support of the bid - this would not have been possible without them. Dave Peel has worked tirelessly to put the bid together, and has been ably supported by Colin Matheson - the Triple Echo TV slot was a masterpiece. On behalf of SOA - thank you.
6th September was an excellent opportunity for Scottish Orienteering. Moravian were approached by Moray’s Active Schools Manager to see if they’d be prepared to assist with a series of activities for local schools during the Scottish Cabinet’s Summer Roadshow visit to Elgin on 6th September. The Cabinet’s theme this year is “Active Nation” Mike Rodgers and Margaret Dearman led the preparation and the Cabinet, led by Alex Salmond took a very active part in the proceedings. This also provided myself an excellent opportunity to meet with members of the Cabinet to push for funding, land access and development. Orienteering was well received and supported by all of the Ministers, particularly Alex Salmond - his first comment to me was “well, you’ve got it all sown up”.
At the last Board meeting two further Directors stepped down, and so we currently have 3 vacancies on the Board - Partnership Director, Performance Director and Marketing & Communications Director. It is imperative that we fill these key positions - the Job Descriptions are all on the SOA website. If you feel you have a particular skill in any of these areas - please drop me a note at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) In the meantime, there is some good news, with the impending appointment of a new Major Events Director - watch this space… “
Community Sports Hubs
Since the Commonwealth Games Legacy plan was launched last September, sportScotland has been working strategically with eight local authority partners with the aim of delivering a hub in each area. Your club might not be next door to one of these hubs, but they are places where orienteering events can be advertised to active people. One at Calderglen High School has just been opened. For detail see:

Club Development Funds
SOA funds are still available for club development projects. See http://www.scottish-orienteering.org/soa/page/soa-club-development-fund/ for details and application form. Next deadline for applications is 1st October.
Coach Update Day #2
Coaches are reminded of the second Update Day, 22nd October in Banchory. All active coaches should try to attend if they didn’t get to the Kinnoull one. Details and booking form are at http://www.scottish-orienteering.org/natcen/page/coach-update-days/
50 Event Challenge
Details and record form are at http://www.scottish-orienteering.org/soa/page/50-years-50-events/ . So far just one person has notified us that they are half way there – well done Alastair Dunlop of Clyde. Members can now include events where they plan or control towards the target of 50 events in the year.
Relays Consultation
Please formally submit your club’s view to the Scottish Relays Championships consultation process that is underway, positive and negative points plus any other relevant ideas or concerns by 12th September – see main news page on SOA website.
Fixtures Registration
Please register future fixtures starting with your club abbreviation.
SOL Prizes
SOL Junior Prizegiving 2011 will be undertaken by SCOTJOS.
All other SOL trophies should be appropriately engraved and returned to Terry O’Brien either at SOL 7 or via SOA Board Member to the meeting on 31st October. The plan is to present at the Scottish Score 2011 on 27th November, which is also the Scottish Inter Club Championships.
