Training Tips 2: Calendar
If you haven’t planned your year yet, I’ve attached a calendar of most of the main events for the first half of the year. It’s not exclusive so feel free to look for other exciting events.
When you’ve identified all the events you fancy doing, pick out two or three that you really want to do well in and mark them in column 2 of the table. For these events you should aim to be both physically and mentally as well prepared as possible (more of that later). These events could be over a two or three week race period or a couple of months apart. If possible, identify another similar race a couple of weeks earlier that you can use as a practice race to try out your race routines etc. Once you’ve got your target races, have a look back at Training Tips 1 and try to work out how you are going to build up your training volume and when you are going to reduce volume and increase quality. If you only have one race period you only have to do this once. If you have two peaks, you can increase your training a second time after the first races and then reduce volume again as the second set of races approach.
