Training at Uath Lochan

Event report

Clyde members enjoy good training, good weather and good food at Lagganlia.  More photos can be found on Clyde Flickr.

The Clyde training weekend took place again at Lagganlia near Feshiebridge over the weekend using the SOA maps of the month.  Most people assembled on Friday evening and on Saturday morning made the trip up to the Moray coast for two sessions of excellent training planned by Patrick in the sand dunes of Roseisle.  Beforehand we were a little dubious about driving even further north but as most Speyside forests were still under considerable snow cover this was what was recommended to us and I, for one, relished the chance to run through such enjoyable, challenging terrain. Congratulations to Lindsey and Emma for getting round a not-very-easy orange course, and thanks to Dave R for spending a good chunk of time introducing Val to orienteering away from paths. Thanks too to Liz for bringing her coloured cones and simplified map, Laura was able to organise some practice for the smaller members of Clyde, who then went on to create some amazing sculptures in the forest.  There was also a good session of den making, interrupted only by the need to get back for tea.

On Sunday, we ventured in to Uath Lochan to see what Hilary was fussing about and, frankly, I’m very glad we took her advice about heading north the day before.  The first minor setback was that the road into the forest was impassable to anything other than 4x4s.  The highest part of the forest was still under thigh deep snow and even where the slightly less hardy among us (myself included) started, there were so many broken branches that the going was particularly treacherous.  That said, everyone completed their allocated training, finishing with an exciting couple of controls when the two trains of orienteers numbering about a dozen people arrived at the final control within a few minutes of each other.  Thanks again Patrick for all your work.

Thanks too to Liz for organising the accommodation, and to Liz and Kate for creating a wonderful meal for us on Saturday evening. however, it’s hard to know whether I actually used up enough calories to justify such a huge portion of sticky toffee pudding!
