Urban racing returns to Erskine for the 3rd time in 4 years. This time for a Scottish Orienteering Urban League (SOUL) series event. Erskine (Park Mains) has previously hosted the WOC Sprint selection races (2010) and the NOPESPORT Urban League race (2011). For 2013 Patrick Walder is mapping a sizeable new area of complex residential and retail properties to the west of the current area (Bargarran and North Barr). The new area promises to be provide an even more intense navigational challenge than the existing map and should provide planner Donald Petrie with ample opportunity to plan a longer leg than his infamous 2011 leg:
Cracking wee urban race on an extended version of the WOC sprint selection race map. No chance to relax at all…I’m wondering whether the long leg is the longest leg on paper I’ve ever done, at a massive 27cm (1:4000).

The event centre will again be the Erskine Sports Centre, which should be within 5min or so of the start/finish. Showers and changing is free for competitors. Ample parking is available in Erskine retail centre.

More information regarding course distances will be available nearer the time but course 6 and 7 will meet BOF guidelines regarding road crossings for U16s. A reminder that competitors on courses 6 and 7 may be shadowed and remain competitive for the SOUL series. A discounted family entry is available for course 7 aimed at local residents, although open to anyone. Family entrants for Erskine will not be counted in the SOUL series.
Erskine centre has a number of local shops as well as a large Morrisons Supermarket and the Sports Centre. There is also a separate swimming pool and a new childrens soft play area (about 5 min walk from sports centre - it is possible to park here and walk up to registration if you are planning to visit the soft play). There is also a bar and a cafe within Erskine centre.

Erskine is a superbly intricate urban area. Mapped to ISSOM standard by Patrick and used for British Squad World Championships Selection races in 2010 and Nopesport Urban League Races in 2011.
