Overview

This Thursday we plan to try out the Maprun orienteering app. This is not as scary as it sounds! The idea is to make setting up events easier for planners and to have some courses available all year round, so you can run them whenever you want to. Various clubs already have sets of courses available.

Miscellaneous

All you need to use the app are a smartphone with GPS and to download the Maprun app (instructions below). At the event you will be given a paper map and run the course as normal. The difference is that there are no controls out, but your phone will burble when you get to each control point. More instructions at the event if you want them.

Your smartphone doesn’t have to be very smart, and doesn’t need a data connection at the event, it just needs GPS enabled as you run round. You will have to carry your phone with you and be able to hear or feel its burble at each control.

Ideally follow the instructions below at home and then turn up at the event as normal (you can also download the app and course at the event, but that will need a data connection).

On your smartphone, go to your app store and download the Maprun app.

Enter your name etc.
Go to the “MR UK” folder and then “MR Scotland” and then the “CLYDE” folder. Select the file “Baljaffray Long” or Baljaffray Short” and it will download the map and course to local storage on your phone (it is a good idea to do this at home where you have wifi). Turn up at the start and we’ll give you a map and further instructions.
